How to create fill in the blanks question type

This document’s purpose is to explain how to create a fill in the blanks question type.

Adding questions to a question pool

  1. To add questions to a question pool, navigate to “Tests” in the left-side menu and choose “Question pool” from the drop-down menu.2. To add questions to a new question pool, click the “New” button. Once the pop-up window is shown:
    3. Enter the pool name.
    4. Press the “Save” button.
    5. To add questions to an existing question pool, select the pool name from the list of pools.

Fill in the blanks question 

Fill in the blank question, consisting of a phrase or a sentence with one or more blank spaces where a candidate should provide a missing word or words.

  1. To add a fill in the blanks question to a newly created or existing question pool, select the “Questions” tab.
  2. Click on the “Add questions” button and select the “Fill in the blanks” option.

    3. Enter the question introduction (e.g., “Fill the empty spaces”).
    4. Click “Add answer” to form a question with empty spaces that will represent answers.      

    Once you start the creation of fill in the blank question type, you can decide whether you would like to create:
    1. Fill in the blank question without offered answers.
    2. Fill in the blank question with offered answers. 

Fill in the blank question without offered answers

To create fill in a blank question type without offered answers, follow the instructions below:
1. Enter the phrase visible to candidates.
2. Enter the correct answers for the blanks.
3. Optionally, enter an additional phrase that will be visible to the candidates.
4. Press the “Add answer” button if you want to add more correct answers for blanks.

Note: If you choose to create fill in a blank question type without offered answers, only the “Manual grading” scoring method will be available. 

Once you have finished creating the question, you can press the “Add to pool” button to save the created question. 

Fill in a blank question with the offered answers 

Fill in a blank question with the offered answers can be scored by three different scoring methods:
1. Defining correct/incorrect answers – only one answer can be marked as a correct one.
2. By answer weight –  the number of points that each answer will carry should be specified.
3. Manual grading – once the test is finished, questions should be graded manually by a test manager or instructor. 

Note: To enable all scoring methods in this question type, you should previously create a question with an offered answer.  

To create fill in a blank question with the offered answers, follow the steps below: 
1. Enter the phrase visible to candidates.
2. Press the “Use offered answers” button. 
3. Optionally, enter an additional phrase that will be visible to the candidates.
4. Press the “Add answer” button if you want to add more correct answers for blanks.

Scoring method

The creation of the question depends on the different scoring methods. To define the scoring method for each question, follows the instructions below:

Defining correct/incorrect answers
 

Note: Once you press the “Use offered answer” button, you will be presented with a form as in the picture below. The “Defining correct/incorrect answers” scoring method will be automatically set by default. 

To create fill in the blanks question with this scoring method, follow the instructions below: 

1. Enter the answer that will be displayed in a drop-down menu.
2. Press “Add answer” to add another optional answer that will be displayed to the candidate.
3. Enter another optional answer that will be displayed to the candidate. 
4. Mark the correct answer. 


If you choose “Defining correct/incorrect answers”, you can define the number of points and penalty points.

By answer weight 

To set this type of scoring method, scroll to the “Scoring method” section, and from the drop-down menu, select “By answer weight” 1. Enter the question text.
2. Enter the answer that will be displayed to the candidate. 
3. Press “Add answer” to add another optional answer that will be displayed to the candidate.
4. Enter another optional answer that will be displayed to the candidate.
5. Define the number of points per question (positive, neutral, or negative/penalty points). 

Manual grading 

To set this type of scoring method, scroll to the “Scoring method” section, and from the drop-down menu, choose “Manual grading” 

1. Enter the question text.
2. Enter the possible answers. 

3. Define the possible range of the points in case of the correct answer. 

Generator settings 

In “Generated settings”, you can define question difficulty and frequency of the question appearing in the test.

To define the question difficulty, open the drop-down many under the “Difficulty” section and select one of the offered values:
1. Easy.
2. Medium.
3. Hard.

To define the frequency of the question appearing in the test, open the drop-down menu under the “Frequency” section and select one    of the proposed values:
1. Never.
2. Rarely.
3. Normal.
4. Often.
5. Always.    


Finally, to save the question, press the “Add to pool” button.

Here you can also :

  1. “Edit” questions;
  2. “Delete” questions;Click on the “Save” button to save questions.
